The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth Greed Mode Guide

Greed Mode is a wave-based survival game mode separate from normal runs. Instead of exploring procedurally generated floors, you fight eleven waves of enemies in a single arena with a shop in the center. After each wave, the shop restocks with new items from the Greed mode item pool. Coins drop from enemies and machines, creating a unique economy where spending power directly competes with survival. Greedier mode adds harder waves and a final Ultra Greed boss fight.

How Greed Mode Works

Select Greed Mode from the main menu character screen. Each character has independent Greed mode completion marks. Waves escalate in difficulty — early waves spawn basic enemies, later waves introduce champions, mini-bosses, and boss-tier threats. The shop in the center offers two items per wave from the Greed pool, plus pickups like keys, bombs, and hearts. Shopkeepers can be bombed for additional coins. There are no treasure rooms, devil deals, or angel rooms — the shop is your only item source.

The cardinal rule of Greed mode is buy early, survive late. Items purchased in waves 1–3 define your build for the remaining eight waves. Prioritize damage and defense over hoarding coins — unused coins have zero value if you die. Key items include Hive Mind (fly synergy scales with wave spawns), Piggy Bank (coin drops on damage), and any item that provides room-clearing damage like Brimstone or Technology. Restock machines in the shop can be bombed to refresh inventory when you have excess coins.

• Wave 1–3 — Buy your core damage item immediately. Skip utility unless it synergizes with your character.
• Wave 4–7 — Add defense: soul hearts, orbitals, or HP ups. Champions appear frequently.
• Wave 8–11 — Only buy if the item is run-winning. Focus on dodging and using existing synergies.
• Ultra Greed (Greedier) — Save bombs for the boss. High DPS builds melt her; low DPS needs patience and dodge skill.

Best Characters for Greed Mode

Azazel starts with flight, short-range Brimstone, and high damage — the strongest Greed mode character for beginners. Lilith begins with the Guppy head familiar that scales with wave density. Keeper uses coins as health, synergizing with Greed mode's economy. The Lost can take free devil deal items in the shop when they appear as HP-cost items. The Greed mode donation machine in the shop persists across all runs. Donating 500 coins total unlocks Greedier mode globally. Continuing to 999 coins unlocks the Special Shop Key and other rewards. Many players use Azazel or Keeper runs to farm coins efficiently. Greed mode marks are required on every character for Dead God completion — plan dedicated Greedier sessions for your weakest characters early in your progression.
