The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth Completion Marks Guide

Earn every completion mark in Isaac Rebirth — Normal, Hard, Greed, Boss Rush, Hush, Mega Satan, Delirium, Mother, and Beast. Full mark grid explained.

Completion marks are the post-it note icons displayed on the character select screen in The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, earned by defeating specific bosses and completing special challenges with each character. There are 10 marks per character on the base path, plus additional marks for Repentance content including Mother on the alternate path and The Beast at the end of the alt path ascent. Collecting every mark on every character is the primary requirement for Dead God — the ultimate completion achievement.

Mark Unlock Rewards

Each completion mark unlocks new items into the global pool when earned for the first time by any character. The specific item unlocked depends on which mark you earn — Normal marks unlock early-game items, while Delirium and Beast marks unlock some of the most powerful Repentance items. This means your first character to earn a mark benefits everyone: the item enters the pool permanently. However, the mark itself is character-specific — Isaac's Mega Satan mark does not appear on Magdalene's grid until she beats Mega Satan herself.

Hard Mode Mark Strategy

Hard mode marks require beating the entire run on Hard difficulty, which increases enemy health, damage, and champion spawn rates while reducing drop rates. For difficult characters like The Lost and Tainted Lost, Hard marks are the biggest barrier to Dead God. Recommended strategies include: using Azazel or Tainted Azazel for early marks, exploiting broken item combos on Tainted Isaac, and using Greed mode marks (which have separate difficulty from main game Hard) as stepping stones. The character unlock guide helps you unlock powerful characters before attempting Hard marks on weaker ones.

Repentance Mark Additions

  • Mother mark — Requires navigating the alternate path from Depths II. Bomb the wall after beating the Depths II boss to access Downpour II. See the alternate path guide.
  • Beast mark — Requires completing the full alt path ascent through Ashpit/Mines, Mausoleum/Gehenna, Corpse, and Home. The hardest mark for most characters.
  • Dead God — Not a mark itself but the achievement for having every mark on every character including Tainted versions.

Boss Rush and Hush Marks

The Boss Rush mark requires beating the Boss Rush challenge — a room that opens if you defeat the Mom's Heart area boss in under 20 minutes (or with a Sharp Plug / Battery combo). Boss Rush pits you against multiple previous bosses in sequence. The Hush mark requires reaching the Blue Womb by beating Hush, accessed through a special blue door that appears when your run exceeds 30 minutes or you hold certain items. Hush is one of the hardest HP sponge bosses, demanding sustained DPS. For boss-specific strategies, see our main bosses guide and boss patterns guide.

Greed mode marks are separate from main game marks and require beating Ultra Greed in Greed mode (Normal for green, Hard for Greedier). These marks unlock Greed mode exclusive items and are generally easier than Hard mode main game marks for most characters. Coordinate your mark hunting with the optimal unlock order to avoid diluting item pools with weak unlocks before you have strong characters ready for Hard marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many completion marks are there total?

Each of the 34 characters has 10 marks, for 340 individual marks. Dead God requires all 340 marks plus Tainted character marks, totaling hundreds of individual achievements.

Do completion marks unlock items?

Yes. Each mark type unlocks specific items into the global pool the first time any character earns it. The item unlocked is tied to the mark category, not the character.

What is the hardest completion mark?

The Beast mark on Hard mode with difficult characters like The Lost, Tainted Lost, and Tainted Keeper is generally considered the hardest. Hush on Hard with low-DPS characters is also extremely challenging.

Can I earn marks in any order?

Yes. Marks are independent — you can earn Mega Satan before Normal if you path correctly. However, some marks require progression knowledge like reaching the Dark Room or alt path.
