The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth — How to Unlock Tainted Lost

Tainted Lost is widely considered Isaac's hardest character — one hit death with quality 4 items only in shops and devil deals, plus a Birthright extra life that deals 200 damage on revival. Unlocking Tainted Lost requires completing the full Lost unlock chain first, then reaching Home specifically as The Lost to access the secret closet.

Prerequisite Unlock Chain

• Unlock The Lost — Die in Sacrifice Room with Missing Poster. See Lost unlock guide.
• Unlock Holy Mantle — Complete Mom's Heart/It Lives on Hard as The Lost without taking damage (or use other Lost marks). Holy Mantle is essential for Lost gameplay.
• Unlock other Lost marks — Build skill with The Lost through easier marks before attempting Home.
• Defeat Mother — Enable Strange Door access for the Ascent path.

The Home Run as The Lost

Start a run as The Lost (not Tainted Lost). Progress through the main path or alternate path to Depths II, defeat Mom, use The Fool card from the marked skull, and insert Polaroid/Negative into the Strange Door. Complete the Ascent, reach Home, and use Red Key (first visit) or Cracked Key (repeat visits) on the hallway outline below Mom's room. The closet contains Tainted Lost — touch to unlock.

Tips for the Lost Home Run

Holy Mantle's free hit per room is critical for surviving the Ascent's reversed floors. Devil deals are free as The Lost — take quality items aggressively. The Fool card is guaranteed from the marked skull on Depths II, so you do not need to carry one. If the run goes poorly before Home, reset rather than wasting the Ascent attempt.
