The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth — How to Beat Mother

Mother is the final boss of the alternate path, fought in a unique arena accessed by falling through a hole in Corpse II's boss room. With 4,222 HP split across two phases, Mother delivers one of Repentance's most intense bullet-hell experiences. Her patterns punish passive play and reward high DPS builds with defensive backup.

Phase 1: Stationary Wall Boss

Mother attaches to the top wall like Mega Satan. Her face and both hands are separate hitboxes — focus fire on the face for efficient damage. She fires projectile spreads, sweeps hands across the arena, and periodically retreats upward to summon 34 Dead Isaac Gapers from the floor. Kill Gapers before they reach Mother or she swipes them, releasing burst projectiles. Phase 1 ends at roughly half health.

Phase 2: Mobile Bullet Hell

Mother detaches, fires a Mega Blast down the center destroying the lower wall, and expands the arena to 1x2. She now slides toward Isaac between attack cycles with increased projectile density. This phase is significantly harder — Chaos Card kills one phase instantly and is best saved for Phase 2. Plan C works if you have extra lives. Book of Shadows, Algiz, and Psy Fly provide critical defense.

Recommended Items and Build Tips

• High DPS — Brimstone, Ipecac, Cricket's Head stacks shorten the fight and reduce exposure time.
• Piercing tears — Lost Contact, Cupid's Arrow, and Technology variants clear bullet walls.
• Defensive actives — Book of Shadows and Algiz trivialize Phase 2 when timed correctly.
• Flight — Helps dodge ground-level Gaper swarms and hand swipes in Phase 1.
• Chaos Card — Instantly deletes one phase; save for Phase 2's expanded arena.
