The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth — Complete Alternate Path Guide

Floor-by-floor walkthrough of the Repentance alternate path: Downpour, Mines, Mausoleum, Corpse, knife pieces, and resource costs for reaching Mother.

The alternate path is Repentance's optional route through Antibirth-inspired floors — Downpour, Mines, Mausoleum, and Corpse — culminating in the Mother boss fight. This path is mandatory for Tainted character unlocks, Dad's Note, and several completion marks. Each floor transition requires specific resources and puzzle solutions that confuse first-time players.

Unlocking Alternate Floor Access

Defeat Hush in the Blue Womb three times total across any characters to earn "A Secret Exit." After this achievement, locked doors appear after Basement I/II bosses. Basement uses one key, Caves II uses two bombs on boarded doors, and Depths II uses two hearts (any combination of red, soul, or black hearts). Each transition leads deeper into the alternate route.

Floor-by-Floor Tips

Downpour features flooded rooms with water mechanics and Wraith enemies visible in reflections. Treasure rooms offer two item choices. Mines introduces minecart hazards and tight corridors — bombs are essential. Mausoleum/Gehenna requires heart sacrifices at doors and features the alternate Mom fight whose defeat opens the Corpse entrance. Corpse mirrors the Womb with scarier enemy variants leading to Mother in Corpse II.

Stay on the alternate path from Basement through Corpse for the smoothest Mother attempt. Jumping back to the main path mid-run is possible but wastes knife piece progress. Read our alternate path reference and Mother boss guide for combat preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enter Downpour without beating Hush three times?

No. The "A Secret Exit" achievement from three Hush kills is required for alternate doors to spawn.

What happens if I lose a knife piece?

Knife pieces persist for the entire run once collected. They cannot be lost until used on the Mausoleum door.

Is the alternate path harder than the main path?

Generally yes. Alternate floors have tougher enemy pools and resource costs at every transition.

Can two players share knife pieces in co-op?

Knife pieces are run-wide. All players benefit from collected pieces in Repentance+ co-op.
